Livestock Genetics

With some of the best livestock genetics in the world right here in Nebraska, there is significant demand internationally for our genetics. The NDA Trade Office is proud to assist our state’s livestock producers in selling their genetics abroad. We actively encourage these transactions by providing information and services about exporting and often host international trade missions, specifically, focused on livestock genetics purchases.

Export Regulations: There are minimal federal regulations involved in exporting livestock genetics and most of the regulations come from the country where the genetics are being exported. The regulations can vary by country, and countries may change their import requirements without notice. Information can be found at the USDA’s Animal and Animal Product Export Information page. The regulations for livestock genetic exports can be found under “Live Animal Export Requirements.”

Branded Program Funds from USLGE: For additional assistance in exporting livestock genetics, many producers utilize the services provided by the U.S. Livestock Genetics Export (USLGE). They receive funds through the Market Access Program (MAP), which is run by the USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS). This funding is available to private livestock producers interested in promoting their livestock, semen, or embryo sales in international markets. Up to 50% of costs associated with exporting can be reimbursed. Approved activities include international marketing, promotional materials, and participation in foreign trade shows and exhibitions. For more information, please contact the Nebraska Agricultural Trade Office at 800-831-0550.

Livestock Directories: As a service to our state’s livestock producers, NDA maintains directories of livestock breeders and producers throughout the state. These directories are completely voluntary and include contact information, as well as short descriptions of the operation. As our Ag Promotion and Development team attends events to promote the state, copies of these directories are distributed to parties interested in livestock genetics from Nebraska. If you are interested in listing your operation in one of our directories, please follow this link and fill out and return the appropriate directory profile form.
